Designing a Breast Prosthesis

Fit and comfort are the first considerations. Accurate measurements of the chest circumference and bra cup size are needed for a proper fit. A well-fitted prosthesis should feel secure but not constricting. It should fit close to the chest and hug the chest contours. The weight of the prosthesis should be as light as possible.

The prosthesis should be made from hypoallergenic materials to prevent skin irritation and allow for comfortable wear. Materials should be durable enough to withstand daily wear and tear and routine cleaning. The prosthesis should closely resemble the shape size and color of the natural breast. The prosthesis should provide cushioning and protection for the chest. The wearer's body will change over time and there should be a way to accommodate these changes without having to purchase a new prosthesis.

All of these factors were considered when I embarked on a quest to build a better breast prosthesis in Canada. The idea for the Bressante Curve breast prosthesis was conceived here in Manitoba after speaking with many women wearing prosthetics. The Curve is soft, lightweight and comfortable; It is made from the finest materials, so it is durable and there is no liquid to leak out. Fully adjustable, the Curve will mold to your body as you wear it becoming more comfortable over time. The lightweight nature of it allows you to move freely. The patented underband sits under the band of your bra to keep the prosthesis in place and protects your chest from elastic and underwires.

Bressante was my company that I established in 2011 for the sole purpose of supporting women struggling with post surgery body changes. Bressante was dissolved in 2019 and Lifeart Prosthetics is now at the forefront of Breast Prosthetics, Finger and Hand Prosthetics and some facial prosthetics development.

The Curve breast prosthesis is a real blend of art, engineering, biomechanics, and just common sense. I believe that no one should have to endure wearing uncomfortable prosthetics. I pride myself in the way my creations function and I will always see them as art. "The human body is just a really amazing thing." -Wendy Smith 2014
